Bank statement Excel template: columns that work
A good transaction sheet is boring on purpose: one row per transaction, one value per cell, and the same columns every month.
Recommended columns
| Date | Description | Amount | Balance | Category | Source page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 02 Oct 2026 | Greenmarket groceries | -42.50 | 957.50 | Food | 1 |
| 03 Oct 2026 | Salary payment | 1,200.00 | 2,157.50 | Income | 1 |
Formats
Format Date as a real date, not text, so sorting and filtering work. Use one signed Amount column (money in positive, money out negative) with two decimals. Keep Balance as printed on the statement so you can spot gaps.
Useful formulas
Total in and out: =SUMIF(C:C,">0") and =SUMIF(C:C,"<0"). Running-balance check in a helper column: =D2+C3-D3 should be 0 on every row; anything else points to a missing or wrong transaction.
StatementNest exports Date, Description, Amount, Balance, Source page and a Review note from supported text-based PDF statements; add your own Category column.
