Bank statements for a mortgage application: organise them in a spreadsheet
Mortgage lenders usually ask for several recent months of bank statements to check income, regular commitments and where a deposit came from. Lenders review the original statements; a spreadsheet is for your own preparation.
What lenders tend to look at
Regular salary payments, recurring outgoings such as loans and subscriptions, any large or unusual deposits, and overdraft use. Policies differ, so ask your lender or broker exactly what they need.
Build a one-sheet summary
Convert each month to a spreadsheet, add a category column, and filter for deposits above a threshold you choose. Note where each large deposit came from so you can answer questions quickly.
| Date | Description | Amount | Category | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 Sep 2026 | Salary payment | 2,450.00 | Income | Employer |
| 14 Sep 2026 | Transfer from savings | 5,000.00 | Deposit | Own savings account |
Keep the originals
Send the lender the statements in the form they request, usually the original PDFs from your bank. Do not edit statements you submit. Your spreadsheet is a checklist, not evidence.
